Yes, we go up to Portland, roughly half an hour from Gallatin by way of Highway 109. Far enough that we pair jobs when we can, so if a neighbor needs one doing as well, mention it and both get finished on the same trip.
Different Rock Under Your Feet
Gallatin sits in the Inner Nashville Basin on Ordovician limestone, and on the ridge streets the wheel rings off shelf rock at eight or ten inches whether you wanted it to or not. Portland is a different landscape entirely: Highland Rim country, cherty silt loam over a heavy clay subsoil, very little outcrop and a lot of loose chert scattered through the top foot.
Practically, that is good news and bad news in equal measure. We can usually take a Portland stump the full ten to twelve inches below grade without hitting ledge, which matters if you are pouring a slab or setting a post in that spot. The chert does not care, though. Fist-sized nodules dull carbide about as efficiently as limestone does.
The clay underneath is the part that governs scheduling. A Rim yard three days after a heavy rain will rut where a Gallatin ridge lot would not have marked at all, so we watch the forecast harder for Portland than for anywhere else we go.

The L&N line came through in 1859 and the place was called Richland until 1887, when the railroad and the post office renamed it Portland to stop mail and trains being confused with another Richland down the state. Do you charge more because Portland is thirty minutes away?
No mileage line on the quote. What distance affects is the calendar rather than the number, because we would rather run two or three Portland stumps on one day than make the trip twice. If you can flex your date by a day or two, that is where you gain.
Can you grind deep enough to pour a slab over the spot?
Usually yes here, and more reliably than in Gallatin. Standard turf depth is six to twelve inches below grade. For a slab, a shed pad or a post footing we go deeper and take out more of the lateral root, and the Highland Rim soil generally lets us without stopping on rock. Tell us what is going in that spot when you send the photo.
What about a stump between the sidewalk and the street?
That strip is normally public right-of-way, which means the tree was the city's rather than yours even though you mowed around it for twenty years. Get confirmation from the city before booking. We will not grind in a right-of-way on a homeowner's say-so alone.
