Past about thirty inches a stump stops being a size and starts being an access problem. Nearly every big one in this city is either behind the house or down a slope.
Where Gallatin Keeps the Big Ones
Two very different places. Out on the eastern edge toward Bledsoe Creek and the lake bends, acre-plus wooded parcels — a good many with no homeowners association at all — mean nobody ever made anybody take a dead tree down. Water oak, shagbark hickory, sycamore and black walnut stand dead for a decade, come down in their own time, and the stump left behind is forty inches or better, half rotted through and set well back down a wooded slope from the driveway.
The other place is the aged core. Silver maples planted as fast cheap shade when those streets were new are now three to four feet at the base, with a flat plate of root spreading under a narrow driveway apron and, on plenty of them, a clay sewer lateral from the same decade running underneath.
The first kind is a reach problem. The second is a precision problem. Neither is solved by a bigger machine alone.
Rock Grown Into the Wood
A tree that spent a century on a limestone shelf grows around what it cannot push aside. Split open the base of an old water oak from the eastern lots and you will find fist-sized limestone lifted an inch or two off the bedrock and locked in by fifty rings of growth.
That rock destroys teeth. So does old fence wire on any tree that ever stood on a property line, and so do the nails and staples that turn up in yard trees near where a clothesline or a swing once hung. On a big unknown stump we start slow on the outer flare and let the wheel tell us what is in there before committing to full feed rate.
We carry spare teeth and change them on site. A crew that pushes through on dull carbide is slower, louder and harder on your lawn than one that stops for ten minutes and re-tips.
Hollow Does Not Mean Fast
People see a hollow center and assume half the work is already done. The opposite is closer to true. The punk in the middle is wet, it packs the wheel and the discharge instead of throwing clear, and the shell around it — six to ten inches of it — is the densest, hardest wood the tree ever laid down.
Hollows also come occupied. From late June through September a hollow hardwood stump in Sumner County is a reasonable bet for yellow jackets, and finding them with a spinning wheel is nobody's idea of a good afternoon. We look before we cut, and if there is a nest, the job moves to the following week after it is dealt with rather than the crew improvising.
Getting Iron Down to a Forty-Inch Stump
The walk-behind clears about thirty-six inches, which is what gets us through a gate and down a side yard. The larger tow-behind machine that a forty-eight-inch stump really wants needs closer to six feet and a route that does not involve a set of steps.
On the lake-side slopes that route sometimes has to be built: we winch down, work off mats, and winch back. On soft bend alluvium after rain we will not do it at all — a heavy machine on saturated ground leaves ruts that take a season and a bill to fix, and the stump has already waited ten years.
What helps most before we arrive is honest information about the way in. Gate width, step count, slope, and whether anything between the truck and the stump would have to come off its hinges.
What a Genuinely Large Stump Costs
A mature hardwood stump in this market runs roughly $350 to $700 in 2026, and where it lands inside that band is set as much by the walk and the wood as by the tape measure. A forty-inch oak twenty feet off a paved drive is at the bottom of it. The same oak two hundred feet down a wooded slope with a winch involved is at the top.
Past about forty-five inches with a bad approach, we quote the specific job rather than a band. You get that figure before we come, from photographs, with a note of what would change it — because on the big ones the thing that changes it is usually something buried, and we would rather flag the possibility than discover it and hand you a surprise.

- Whether it is sound, hollow, or has been down long enough to go punky
- The narrowest point between the street and the stump, measured not estimated
- Slope, steps, and whether the ground holds water after rain
- Anything that was ever a fence line, clothesline post or property corner near it
- Where the chips can go — a big stump makes a genuinely large pile

Is there a stump too big for you to grind?
Diameter alone rarely stops us — the flare on a forty-eight-inch trunk is wide but a wheel gets there in passes. Access is what stops us. A very large stump behind a thirty-inch gate, at the bottom of a flight of steps, or on ground too soft to carry the machine is a job we will decline honestly rather than damage your property proving a point.
The tree has been down since about 2015. Is an old stump easier?
Partly. The outer sapwood has softened and the bark is off, which helps. But the heartwood on oak, walnut and hickory is still hard, the center may be a wet punky mess that packs the machine, and a decade of soil wash has driven grit and small rock into the root collar. Old stumps are frequently slower per inch than fresh ones, not faster.
The stump is right against my driveway apron. Can you grind it without cracking the concrete?
Yes, and this is the standard mid-century Gallatin job. The plate roots under the apron are what lifted it in the first place. We work from the yard side, take the flare back under the edge in short controlled passes, and we do not lever against the slab. If the apron is already cracked and lifted we will say plainly whether grinding will settle it or whether that section needs replacing regardless.
How big a pile of chips does a forty-inch stump make?
More than a pickup bed. Ground wood expands to roughly two or three times what your eye estimated from the standing stump, and on a large hardwood that is a genuinely awkward heap. Most people on acreage have us crown what fits back into the hole and spread the rest in a wood line. In a subdivision it usually needs loading out, which is a separate line on the quote.
Can two big stumps be done in one visit?
Usually, and it is the cheaper way to do it — the drive out, the trailer drop and the locate ticket happen once regardless. What decides it is teeth and daylight. Two forty-inch hardwoods full of grit can consume a full set of carbide, so if both are on the property, tell us at the quote and we come loaded for it rather than making a second trip.
