Stump Grinding in Woodhaven on the Lake, Gallatin

Two storms, seventeen years apart, stumps still standing

The April 7, 2006 tornado came out of Goodlettsville as an F3, ran twenty-two and a half miles on a track eight hundred and eighty yards wide, killed seven people, all of them in Gallatin, injured a hundred and twenty-eight, and damaged or destroyed something like seven hundred homes and businesses in Sumner County. The storm survey names Woodhaven specifically. Trees that snapped off eight or ten feet up were cut down to a stub and left, because in the spring of 2006 there was no equipment available in this county for months.

Then on December 9, 2023 an EF-2 came through out of Hendersonville at a hundred and thirty miles an hour and did it again on a smaller scale. So there are properties on this street carrying stumps from two different decades of weather.

A snapped-off storm stump is not the same proposition as a clean saw cut. The fibres are torn rather than severed, the plate is often partly lifted on one side with a void underneath it, and there is frequently a rock or two pulled up into the root mass. And on lots where the lawn took a year and a landscaper's invoice to re-establish, what actually stops people calling is not the stump. It is what they imagine a machine doing to the grass on the way to it.

Where your lawn stops and the lake's shoreline starts

Old Hickory Lake filled in 1954 when the dam closed, and the Corps of Engineers holds a strip of shoreline above the water. On the water side of that line the sycamore, the black willow and the shingle oak standing in what looks like the bottom of your garden are federal property, and cutting or grinding there is not a decision a homeowner or a contractor gets to make.

That line is not always where people assume. It does not follow the water's edge, it does not follow the mown grass, and on the irregular parcels along this stretch it can sit well up the slope. Where a stump straddles the line, the honest answer is that we grind the part on your deed and stop. That is not us being awkward; it is the only version of this that does not put you on the wrong side of a federal boundary.

Soft ground, and what we do instead of ruining a lawn

This is the other Gallatin. Up on the Long Hollow ridge streets there is rock eight inches down. Down in the lake bends the ground is deep, soft alluvium that holds water for days after a heavy week, and a grinder that would leave no mark at all on a Fairway Farms lot will cut a rut you can see from the dock.

So the sequence is: the lightest machine that will do the job rather than the fastest, a mat or plywood track across the worst of the route, and a date set behind a dry stretch rather than in front of one. If it is genuinely too wet we say so and move the job, and we would rather have that conversation on the phone than after leaving tracks across a re-sodded yard.

The upside of soft ground is that once you are on it, the grinding itself is quick and the depth is easy. No ledge, no embedded rock except what the storm lifted, and a clean bowl to backfill.

Sycamore, willow and redcedar: three different grinds

Sycamore is the big one down here and it is wet, stringy work. The spoil volume off a mature sycamore is prodigious and it does not settle quickly. Black willow is soft and feeds fast, but the plate is enormous and shallow, so the crater is wide and the backfill requirement surprises people.

Hackberry, common all along this shoreline, hollows out from the centre while the shell stays hard, which makes the wheel grab unevenly and slows the cut. Eastern redcedar on the bank edges is the opposite: dense, tight-grained, and usually carrying grit washed into the buttress, so it eats teeth for its size.

Silver maple sits in the middle and there is a lot of it. Fast to grind, huge spoil, and it will sprout from severed roots, which on a lakefront lawn people notice immediately. Those get taken wider than the flare for that reason.

Before we quote a lake-lot grind

• Your parcel boundary confirmed against the county viewer, particularly on the water side
• Irrigation zones and heads flagged, because the state locate marks none of them
• The route we can use if the direct line crosses the softest ground
• Whether a dock, boathouse or seawall structure sits in the working radius
• Where the spoil can go, which is never over the bank and never into the water
• Any septic field, lift station or pump line between the drive and the stump
• How recently the lawn was re-sodded, since that changes the machine we bring
